The IAFF was formed in 1918. The IAFF has fought for better wages, benefits, working conditions and improved safety for union members. The IAFF has also pushed for more full-time union firefighters.

1918
IAFF was founded on February 28 in Washington, D.C., with 36 delegates representing 24 local firefighter unions.The first president was Thomas G. Spellacy, and WIlliam A. Smith became the first secretary-treasurer.

Early goals
The founding resolutions focused on improving firefighter welfare, including implementing a two-platoon system, pension laws, promoting fire safety with automatic sprinklers, and building inspections.
1920s-1930s
IAFF grew steadily, advocating for better wages, safer working conditions, and pensions during challenging times like the Great Depression.

1940s-1950s
The IAFF played a critical role in improving firefighter benefits during and after World War II, including securing life insurance policies and better work schedules.

1960s-1970s
Focused on health and safety improvements, including the introduction of protective gear, advanced training, and addressing occupational hazards like cancer.
1980s-1990s
Expanded into legislative advocacy, including lobbying for national fire service funding, and raising awareness of post-traumatic stress in firefighters.
2000s
The IAFF became a prominent voice in national and international firefighting issues, responding to major events like 9/11 attacks and enhancing disaster response prototcols.
Present
The IAFF represents over 330,000 members across the U.S. and Canada, advocating for modernized firefighter safety, health, and equity.
